ACS Gas Categories

Category 1 Applicant

This category is for existing gas operatives who are:

  • Seeking to renew expiring or expired certificates of gas safety competence, ie, HSC ACOP, Accredited Certification Scheme (ACS) or Gas Services National/Scottish Vocational Qualification (N/SVQ).
  • Seeking assessment and certification to extend range of gas work.
  • Foreign nationals seeking to obtain certificates of gas safety competence enabling to meet UK gas work requirements.

Re-assessment entry only

Must be able to show original ACS Certificate of Competences and knowingly been working continuously for the last 5 years on gas appliances. Secondly must have a knowledge of any revised legislation in the previous 5 years.

Category 2 Applicant

Applicants must provide evidence that they hold a craft qualification or S/NVQ relevant to the area of gas work you are seeking to obtain suitable certification initially in:

  • Plumbing (domestic or commercial central, water heating or pipework installation)
  • Pipefitter/Welder (commercial pipework, pipework commissioning and meter installation)
  • Heating and Ventilation (commercial pipework and appliance installation) Refrigeration Engineer/Fitter (commercial pipework and appliance installation)

Applicants must provide sufficient written evidence that they have had relevant on-the-job training under the supervision of a Gas Safe registered business.

Applicants in this category may also attend the Basic Gas Domestic Utilisation Programme.

Category 3 Applicant

New entrants to the gas industry who do not possess any relevant related qualifications and/or experience who are looking for a career change or entering employment for the first time.

Individuals in this category are advised to seek training and experience, before applying to take ACS assessments, which will result in attainment of a recognised qualification such as S/NVQ in Gas Services, Installation and Maintenance or obtain employment with a Gas Safe registered business who can facilitate on-the-job training along with attending a structured off-the-job training course such as the Basic Gas Domestic Utilisation Programme.
