Gas installer gets custodial sentence
In June 2006 a gas installer was given a custodial sentence for carrying out unsafe work in peoples homes. The Health & Safety Executive (HSE) approached Connaught Academy to be involved in an HTV programme highlighting the importance of only using recognised CORGI qualified installers.
The programme concentrated on the dangers of paying rogue traders to undertake gas work in domestic homes and the ultimate price paid for illegal gas operatives.
Hugh Emment, HSE, addressed the programme from the gas training workshops stating that training is a requirement by law. Huw Evans, Regional Training Manager for Connaught Academy, explained about the rigorous training and assessments that operatives need to undertake to become fully qualified and competent in their gas trade.
The message was clear that householders must check both sides of the CORGI cards to ensure that the gas operative is qualified to work on the appliances in their homes. If not they “could ultimately pay with their life.”
The HTV programme was a warning that offenders will be punished.
Connaught Academy is an accredited Gas ACS Assessment Centre where gas operatives can undertake their ACS assessments to keep abreast of current legislation and consequently keep their CORGI registrations valid.
