Achiever Daniel swaps labouring to be ‘Student of the Year’
Trowbridge-based Daniel Gould decided to swap a pick and shovel for learning a trade – and now he’s been named Student of the Year by Connaught Academy.
Daniel, 25, won the accolade from the Connaught Academy for his commitment to gaining a Level 3 City & Guilds Plumbing Technical Certificate. Daniel was a block release student, which meant that to undertake his studies he had to spend periods of time away from his wife Leila and daughter Cerhys. He stayed at a hotel for many weeks while he studied at Connaught Academy in Caerphilly, one of the largest vocational training colleges in the UK with over 500 students a year qualifying in a range of trades.
Starting as a site labourer working for Connaught in West Wiltshire on a kitchen refurbishment programme, Daniel asked his supervisor to help him progress into plumbing and he was enrolled on a training course.
Connaught Academy judges said, “Daniel shows that you can achieve whatever base you start from. He has all-round qualities as a student and a very strong will to succeed.” Daniel said, “It was always an ambition of mine to get into plumbing and I felt I needed to reward the commitment that Connaught showed by doing the best I could for them.”
